welcome to my commissions page

Each commission featured on this page was an effort of trust, learning, and collaboration between myself and the client. My favorite commissions are those in which the client teaches me about their work and vision, I share with them my ideas and approaches to visual storytelling, and we meet somewhere in the middle. This cross-pollination integrates artistry, craft, research, and history into a final product that can be a lasting symbol for my clients. I am grateful for all of the artists, researchers, and individuals who trust me to work with them in these deeply engaging creative experiments. If you are interested in commissioning my work for your album, book, business, personal collection, or other project, please click on the commissions button at the bottom of the page to share your idea and enquire about my consultation fees.

PLOUGHSHARES AND SWORDS, INDIA’S NUCLEAR PROGRAM IN THE GLOBAL COLD WAR

October 2020 - Book Cover

This collage was commissioned by author Jayita Sarkar for the  cover for her book, “Ploughshares and Swords, Indias Nuclear Program in the Global Cold War”, published by Cornell University Press in 2022. This was an opportunity for Sarkar and myself to engage in an exchange of ideas and reflections which invited us both to expand our horizons and the ways in which we articulate our own understandings around the book’s content. See Sarkar’s comments on the process and a description of the collage:

“…Working with a collage artist was a fascinating experience, forcing me to visually reconstruct the idea of my book. Through Galen's remarkable talent and after several rounds of brainstorming, we came up with what became the book cover. The landmass that drops from the right is the map of south Bombay (present-day Mumbai), where the India’s Department of Atomic Energy and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research are located, thousands of miles from India’s capital, New Delhi. If you know the cartography of the area, you can locate Trombay, where the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is— the nerve centre of India's nuclear program. The landmass is filled with a collage of archival materials in multiple languages, representing India’s national nuclear program as a globally sourced endeavor. The figure to the left is an altered version of the United Nations sculpture in New York, “Let us beat our swords into ploughshares,” which has inspired the title of the book. The figure raises one sword while beating the other into a ploughshare, representing the duality in India’s nuclear program, which the book explores. The blurred backdrop is a partial map of the world, showing several places that India received nuclear technologies and know-how from, cutting across the Cold War divide.”

QUARANTINE DREAMS, A BROOKLYN RAGA MASSIVE COMPILATION

May 2021 - Album Cover

This collage was commissioned for the cover of a compilation album released by Brooklyn Raga Massive in the summer of 2021. As the dangers and restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic eased here in the US it raged in India. The impetus to release this album was to raise money to support the motherland from where so much training, guidance and inspiration to the BRM community originates.

The album is made up of an eclectic collection of tracks made by many BRM members throughout the quarantine. The words “quarantine”, “a”, and “compilation” were cut from a collage of Carnatic music notations, Bach, and Theodorakis’ Zorba the greek notation. The BRM letters reference the urban development in NYC, the commerce and industry, and the fight for survival. This culminates in the inevitable ruin of capitalist and racist power structures at the M, with a music goddess showing the path to love, life, and creativity.
